Rome-area Manufacturers Nominated for Annual Honor

Atlanta, GA – April 2, 2003 -- Georgians for Manufacturing today announced that three companies from the Coosa Valley area were nominated for “Manufacturer of the Year.” The Economic Development Division of Coosa Valley Technical College nominated the HON Company, Mannington Commercial, and Temple-Inland Solid Wood Products.

According to Pete McDonald, Vice President of Economic Development, these outstanding companies play a vital role in the economy of the Coosa Valley Region. The companies were selected based upon the following criteria; a) corporate responsibility including company involvement in civic activities and educational partnerships, b) economic impact including years of operation, capital investment, and number of employees and c) development of the workforce including employee education programs, helping employees balance work and family life, employee recognition programs, and multicultural awareness programs. The winners of the competition will be named by Governor Sonny Perdue at the Governor’s Awards Luncheon at the Cobb Galleria in Atlanta on Thursday, April 17.

Governor Perdue recently signed a proclamation declaring April 14-18 Manufacturing Appreciation Week, noting that approximately 10,000 manufacturing facilities are located in Georgia, which provide more than 500,000 jobs and contribute more than $61 billion to the state’s economy each year.

In addition to Governor Perdue, who will deliver the keynote address, also speaking at the luncheon will be Dr. Kenneth Breeden, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education, Glenn Cornell, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Industry, Trade, and Tourism, Rick Duke, Director of the Georgia Tech Economic Development Institute, Jim Reese, CEO of Randstad North America, Phil Jacobs, President of BellSouth, Georgia Operations, and David Ratcliffe, President of the Georgia Power Company. Channel 11’s Wes Sarginson will be Master of Ceremonies.

Winners of the statewide student design contest will also be announced at the luncheon. This year, nearly 3,000 students from around the state submitted entries featuring Georgia manufacturers and their products to be considered for this year’s placemat, poster, and t-shirt designs. Three student winners will be chosen in each category, and Governor Perdue will present them with scholarship checks.

This is the ninth year celebrating Manufacturing Appreciation Week in Georgia. This year’s sponsors include BellSouth, Georgia Power, Pattillo Construction, BeringPoint, Randstad North America, and the Georgia Tech Economic Development Institute. Last year’s winners were Briggs & Stratton, HL-A (Honda Lock), and Sweetheart Cup.
