CVTC Announces 2003 GOAL and Rick Perkins Award Winners
TerraALL-238
2003 GOAL Recipient Terra Waters
(Second from Left)
March 4, 2003

The Rick Perkins and GOAL awards were both presented at a luncheon today at Coosa Valley Country Club. Coosa Valley Technical College, Seven Hills Rotary Club, Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce, Gordon County Chamber of Commerce and the Polk County Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event.

Early Childhood Education student, Terra Waters, was the winner of the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) award and was the student who best represented the “new image” of Georgia’s technical colleges. Mrs. Waters was nominated by Early Childhood Care and Education instructor Beatriz Stitzer who believes that Terra exemplifies a good work ethic, a dedicated sense of loyalty, and a healthy enthusiasm for promoting technical education. Representatives of business and industry in Floyd, Gordon, and Polk Counties interviewed the GOAL nominees. “Judges are favorably surprised and impressed by the students that we serve,” said Coosa Valley Technical College President Craig McDaniel. “I hear good things in the community about our students, and much of it comes from the impressions the students make in the GOAL interviews.” Mrs. Waters will receive an all expenses paid trip to Atlanta where, for three days, she will compete with students from 38 other technical colleges in Georgia for the title of State GOAL Winner and a new automobile.

Mrs. Waters was one of four finalists for the 2003 GOAL Award. Other finalists were:
  • William Hamilton, Computer Information Systems
  • Brian Hicks, Computer Information Systems
  • Kathy Knill, Diagnostic Medical Sonography

The Rick Perkins award was given to Sonography/Vascular Technology Instructor Leif Penrose in recognition of the significant contributions he has made to technical education through innovation and leadership in his field. Mr. Penrose was nominated by fellow co-workers and then selected by a panel of business and industry professionals after an interview. He will now compete against other top technical instructors on a state level.

Six CVTC instructors were finalists for this year's Rick Perkins Award. Mr. Penrose was joined by:
  • Lori Kilgo, Radiologic Technology
  • Darice Lewis, Computer Information Systems
  • Brian McClellan, Computer Information Systems
  • Cathy Vann, Business Office Technology
  • April Welch, General Education
