John R. Ware II Elected As 2004-2005 President of Technical College Directors’ Association

Technical College Directors’ Association of Georgia, Inc. recently announced the election of John R. Ware II, as President for the 2004-2005 year. Ware was elected president at the annual Technical College Directors’ Association Annual Conference held in Savannah, Georgia.

Coosa Valley Technical College (CVTC) is one of thirty-four colleges that make up the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education. The technical college system serves 159 counties throughout the state of Georgia. Each technical college has a Board of Directors that is comprised of local business, industry, and community leaders. A major strength of the school’s administration is the quality of governance provided by the local Board of Directors.

CVTC’s Board serves both in a community advisory capacity and in a limited administrative capacity, performing certain oversight responsibilities as designated by State Board policy. The local Board is comprised of twelve members from the business and industrial communities from three counties in the service area (Floyd County, Gordon County, and Polk County). State Board Policy defines the role and responsibilities of the local Board. Board members are selected because of their experience, ability, and dedication to deal with issues that relate to the mission of occupational education and are without contractual, employment, or personal financial investment in the school. CVTC’s Board of Directors includes Ron Adam, Robert Berry, Tommy Curtis, J.W. LeGrande, Cathy Harrison, Carl Herring, Terri Lupo, Jackie Lynch, Tim Mahanay, Otis Raybon, Jr., Richard Strawhorn, and Chairman John R. Ware II.

Members of the local Board of Directors of all the technical colleges in Georgia are automatically members of Technical College Directors’ Association of Georgia (TCDA) and participate in its programs. TCDA was formed in 1990 as an educational non-profit organization. Through TCDA, board members have the opportunity to attend many workshops and conferences to help them serve as better directors. Programs include New Board Member Orientation, Board Chair Training, Annual Meeting Education Sessions and Leadership Conferences, as well as committee involvement. Members can also become Certified Board Members through TCDA. The mission of TCDA is to build the capability of the technical colleges’ boards of directors to effectively increase the value of technical and adult education in Georgia.

As President, Ware will oversee TCDA’s Executive Committee. Ware is CVTC’s first Board Member to hold this prominent position. "John Ware knows how vital the role of board members is to technical education. He has years of experience at the local and state level and will serve TCDA well as President," stated Cathy Fike, Executive Director of TCDA Georgia, Inc.

Ware is a Training/HR Specialist with Temple-Inland, Inc. and currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors at Coosa Valley Technical College and has been a board member since 1999. Ware has a longstanding involvement with local community and civic activities in the Rome and Floyd County community. Ware serves and has served as a Board Member on several organization’s Board of Directors including Coosa Valley Technical College’s Foundation, Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Industry Association, Rome Rotary Club, and Technical College Directors’ Association. Ware is a member of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce’s Transportation Committee, a member of the Executive Advisory Committee and Graduate Advisory Council for Berry College’s Campbell School of Business, a member of Floyd County’s Board of Elections and Registrations, a member of the Board of Trustees for United Way of Rome and Floyd County, served as 2003-2004 United Way Campaign Chairman, served as 2003-2004 Vice President of Technical College Directors’ Association, and participated in the Georgia Tech Workplace Transformation and Human Resource Practice in Pulp and Paper Mills Field Study.
