Hackney Addresses Exchange Club of Rome"

Susan Hackney, Director of Adult Literacy at Coosa Valley Technical College, recently spoke about literacy at the Rome Exchange Club.
Hackney presented statistics from a speech made by Cheryl Keenan from the United States Department of Education, the Division of Adult Education and Literacy which handles and allocates the federal funds for Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language programs. The presentation included trends in the widening gap between labor market needs and the ability of our current labor force to meet those needs. It also focused on the growing gap between the education preparation students are receiving compared to the skills needed in the work force. Statistics included:
• Few jobs (15% and shrinking) are available in the current U.S economy for undereducated and unskilled workers;
• 2/3 of all jobs will soon require education and skills beyond the high school diploma;
• Higher levels of education equal greater earning power (adult without high school diploma earns 42% less than an adult with a high school diploma);
• Maintaining our competitive edge in the U.S. economy will require greater investment and participation in adult and postsecondary education;
• 23% of American adults over age 25 and 28.5% in Floyd County have not completed high school.
Hackney stated to Exchange Club members that Coosa Valley Technical College is an official provider of adult education services under contract with the U.S Department of Education and the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education.
“There are daytime and evening programs in Adult Basic Education, Preparation for the GED Test for High School Diploma, programs for children and families, programs in all correctional and probation facilities, and English as a Second Language in Floyd, Gordon, and Polk Counties,” stated Hackney.
