Technical College State Board Approves Tuition and Fee Increase

The State Board of Technical and Adult Education yesterday approved a $3.00 per credit hour increase in tuition and the implementation of a $35.00 per quarter Instructional and Technology Support fee for students attending Georgia’s thirty four technical colleges. The increases will be effective fall quarter 2005.

The current tuition rate for technical college students is $28.00 per credit hour and the new rate will be $31.00 per credit hour, up to a maximum of twelve credit hours. The Instructional and Technology Support fee is a new fee and will be charged to all credit students, regardless of the number of hours they are enrolled for.

In discussing the tuition increases, the board discussed the fact that over 80% of technical college students have their tuition costs covered by the HOPE grant or scholarship programs and that the tuition increase will be covered by HOPE as well.

The Instructional and Technology Support fee will not be covered by the HOPE program. Almost 30% of the technical college system’s receive federal Pell grants and these students will be able to receive additional Pell grant funds to cover the new Instructional and Technology Support fee. For students not receiving the Pell grant, the new fee will be an out of pocket expense. According to a statement released to the colleges by the state board after yesterday’s meeting in Augusta, “the goal of the fee is to increase the number of faculty along with the faculty resources necessary to address the growing demand for training in critical strategic industries.”

The new fee and tuition increase is expected to provide an additional $719,000 into Coosa Valley Technical College’s fiscal year budget based on calculations using 2004 enrollment data, according to college president Craig McDaniel.
