Coosa Valley Technical College Graduates First Class of Dental Assistants Coosa Valley Technical College recently held a pinning ceremony for the first graduating class of students in the Dental Assisting Program. The ceremony included the pinning of 10 graduates. Several honors, awards, and scholarships were presented. Graduate Jennifer Lee Goss was awarded a $500 Hinman Dental Scholarship, Tamila Davis was awarded the “Most Outstanding Dental Assistant Student Award,” and Katrina Chivers received the Director’s Award and a scholarship from Dr. Lavonne Fore. Former Dental Assisting Program Director, Ronda Wood, was in attendance at the ceremony. Back in the fall, the Dental Assisting students participated in 16 hours of instruction and testing to receive certificates of compliance for Expanded Duties of Dental Assistants from the Georgia State Board of Dentistry. The students received certificates in the following areas: Course IV – 10 tested and 10 received certification Impressions for denture repair Impressions for night guards Face bow set-up Retraction cord placement Provisional restorations Course V - 10 tested and 10 received certification Periodontal pack placement Bleaching Liners and bases Dentin bonding Desensitization Course VI - 9 tested and 9 received certification Application of fluoride Application of dental sealants Nitrous oxide monitoring Dry socket (alveolitis) redressing During summer quarter the students had DEN 137 – Dental Assisting Expanded Functions to prepare for this intense weekend.
