Coosa Valley Technical College’s Bruce Mashburn Finishes In the Top 5 At State GOAL Competition
Coosa Valley Technical College’s 2006 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) Winner, Bruce Mashburn was recently named as a top 5 finalist at the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education’s State GOAL competition, held in Atlanta, Georgia. There were 38 local GOAL winners from Georgia Technical Colleges who competed at the state level. Kayla Chaney from Okefenokee Technical College was named as the 2006 GOAL winner.

Mashburn, a Coosa Valley Technical College (CVTC) Vascular Sonography student, was nominated by his instructor Leif Penrose. Mashburn enrolled in CVTC as his career as an Aviation Mechanic at Delta Airlines was coming to an end. Mashburn was aware of the financial troubles at Delta and realized a career change was inevitable. “Since an early age, I have had an interest in technology. Learning how things work and being able to understand these concepts gives me a sense of attained knowledge and accomplishment,” Mashburn stated.

“Bruce is a dynamic individual who left the airline industry to move into healthcare,” stated Leif Penrose, CVTC Vascular Sonography Instructor. “He stays late to help other students in study groups, stands out in group activities, and is generally respected as a ‘natural leader'," Penrose added.

In 2006, the GOAL program celebrated 35 years. GOAL focuses on excellence in technical education. During GOAL Week, as declared and named by Governor Perdue, outstanding students attending Georgia’s technical colleges and divisions are recognized for academic excellence and personal achievement. From this outstanding group of students, a panel of judges selects one student, the GOAL Winner, to serve as the statewide student-of-the-year and ambassador of technical education in Georgia.

GOAL competition begins early in the year. Technical college instructors across Georgia identify their most promising students and nominate them for GOAL based on academic achievement and personal leadership. The first phase of GOAL takes place at the local technical college level. As nominees move through an interview process, the screening committee selects the top student to represent their college and community. The competition for the state title involves another round of interviews in front of a panel of judges made up of Georgia government and industry leaders. Kayla Chaney, this year’s winner, will serve as an ambassador for technical education in Georgia. Chaney will make many public appearances throughout the year including addresses to the Georgia General Assembly, the Governor, the Legislative Breakfast, and the Georgia Technical College System Leadership Conference, to name a few.

GOAL is more than an awards banquet; it is a weeklong who’s who event where Georgia’s business, government, and industry leaders join our technical colleges to celebrate technical education’s vital impact on Georgia’s workforce, prosperity, and future. GOAL strives to stimulate the community’s interest in and knowledge of technical education by recognizing outstanding student talent as well as strengthening the association between educators and the business community. GOAL emphasizes the importance of technical education in today's world and rewards students who exemplify excellence in their chosen program of study. Chaney, the recipient of the statewide GOAL award, is recognized as the Georgia technical education system’s Student of the Year and received a new car as the grand prize.
