CVTC Horticulture Students Help Comcast Cares with Pepperell Middle School Project Students in Coosa Valley Technical College’s (CVTC) environmental horticulture program were recently recruited by Comcast Cares to help with a beautification project at Pepperell Middle School. Nick Knight, a second year environmental horticulture student at CVTC, served as the project coordinator for the installation this past Saturday.
Shannen Ferry, CVTC’s environmental horticulture instructor, was approached by Comcast about the possibility of some of her students helping with the project at Pepperell Middle School.
“Comcast Cares is a company-wide day of service in which Comcast employees, their families, and friends volunteer in their local communities. This is the second year that we have partnered with Pepperell Middle School as a part of our Comcast Cares Day,” said Ellie Scoggins, payroll administrator at Comcast and a project coordinator for Comcast Cares.
According to Scoggins, she and Diane Christian, also a project coordinator for Comcast Cares, met with Pepperell Middle School’s Principal, Dottie Taylor, and found out that the school wanted to improve the look of the breezeway entrance.
Scoggins said they needed some expertise in coming up with a plan for the area and that’s when she made contact with Coosa Valley Technical College.
“Ellie Scoggins from Comcast contacted me to see if my class could help create a beautification project for the Comcast Cares program,” stated Ferry. “I wanted to get my students involved in this project, so as a part of their Garden Design class, I challenged them to create a plan to help beautify the breezeway entrance at Pepperell Middle School.”
The five students involved in the project, Lynn Akin; Leigh Anne Eley, Nick Knight, Sandy Sanders, and Audrey Silvey worked on the design for two weeks.
“We went out to the school and took pictures and measured the breezeway, said Ferry.
After a brainstorming session, the students came up with a theme they called “Pepperell Pride.”
“We tried to come up with a design that included plants that would coordinate with Pepperell’s colors and plants that reflected the Dragon theme. One of the plants we incorporated was the Black Dragon Cryptomeria,” added Ferry.
Their hard work on the plan came to fruition Saturday as Comcast volunteers, with the coordination of CVTC student Nick Knight, completed the installation.
“These students worked exceptionally well as a team. They came up with the concept and drafted it out and they were very excited to help with this beautification element for an outstanding school like Pepperell Middle School,” commented Ferry.
Scoggins added, “Ms. Ferry and her class have been wonderful helping us with the landscape plan and offering Nick’s help to us on our Comcast Cares Day this past Saturday.”
