Coosa Valley Technical College Graduate Featured on Fox 5 News for Rescuing a Man on I-575 (Taken From Fox 5 News Reports - Reporter Beth Galvin)
Gemma Koo, a 2007 Coosa Valley Technical College Echocardiography graduate, helped rescue a man last Tuesday on Interstate 575. According to Fox 5 News Reporter Beth Galvin, Koo and Lana Seymour, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta co-workers, were driving down I-575 last Tuesday, when they noticed a truck up against a guard rail. They could tell something was wrong with the driver. The two pulled over and saw a man slumped behind the wheel, shaking. The gentleman, 40 year old Sam Brown, was having a seizure. Koo saw that the window of the truck was down, so she turned off the engine. As she did, she noticed a burning smell. At that point, the two women saw that the truck was on fire. They knew they couldn’t pull the man out by themselves, so they began flagging down people on the interstate. Eventually, two construction workers pulled over and were able to get Brown out of the truck. Immediately after that, the truck exploded.
Thanks to Koo and Seymour, Brown is in stable condition at an Atlanta hospital.
Instructors at CVTC would have expected no less from a top notch student such as Koo. “Gemma was a hardworking, outgoing, and friendly student that really cared about others. She was well-liked by her classmates, and it comes as no surprise to us that she did such a noble thing for someone that was in need,” stated Nee Barnor, Clinical Coordinator for Ultrasound programs at Coosa Valley Technical College.
