General Shale Donates Bricks to CVTC Foundation
General Shale Brick, Rome donated 23,040 bricks to the Education For Work campaign of the Coosa Valley Technical College (CVTC) Foundation. The bricks, valued at $4801.01, will be used to complete the renovation of the Springwood building on the Floyd County campus of CVTC. The Springwood building is the home of CVTC’s Business Technology programs.
Jeremy Lawrence, Assistant Plant Manager, General Shale Rome stated, “General Shale values education and we like to give back to the community whenever possible. We have some employees attending classes at CVTC and we hope this will help provide future opportunities for all the people in Rome and Floyd County.”
Craig McDaniel, President, Coosa Valley Technical College said, “General Shale has been a good citizen and a good neighbor. They have stepped up to the plate a number of times to help the community. This is just another indication that they want to be a positive part of Rome and Floyd County.”
The process of having the bricks donated was accomplished by LaTrenda Leaks, New Connections/Special Populations Coordinator, Coosa Valley Technical College, and her husband, Eugene Leaks, Yard Supervisor, General Shale Rome. “LaTrenda came to Johnny Trotter, CVTC’s Facilities Management Director and me about having the bricks donated by General Shale,” said McDaniel. “It’s a great gift. If we had to go out and buy those bricks, it would take money away from instruction.” McDaniel added, “The timing of the donation is great. We want to get this building renovation completed in 2008, the interior is finished and this donation will complete the exterior renovations.”

CVTC’s Education For Work campaign is a five-year investment plan designed to enhance economic development through workforce education in Floyd, Gordon, and Polk counties.
