Article from Calhoun Times

The Calhoun-Gordon Council For a Literate Community and Mannington Carpets have revealed finalists for The GEDD Award and for a place on the GED Wall of Honor.

Presentation of the award is scheduled for Thursday at 11 a.m. in the King Auditorium at Coosa Valley Technical College, Calhoun campus. Unveiling of the plaque for the GED Wall of Honor follows.

Finalists include:

*Tamara Burchett, class of 2005. She was hired as a substitute teacher for city and county schools shortly after graduating, then began a tenure as a para-professional in special education at Calhoun High School for 2005-2006 and has been employed there since. Her goal is to be a fulltime teacher.

At CVTC she was Winter Student of the Quarter, was student speaker at graduation ceremonies, and has passed two Spanish courses, one from CVTC and from Calhoun High in an effort to improve bilingual skills.

She is one of eight children and is married to her high school sweetheart, and the couple has three children.

*Judy Housley, class of 1994. Judy has worked as a family advocate for the Gordon County School System and has overcome numerous childhood obstacles to reach her goal as a cosmetologist. She continued her education at Coosa Valley Technical College, graduating with highest honors (4.0 grade point average) in 2005.

She is married to Harris Housley, who is employed by the Calhoun Police Department. She is reaching her career goal as a stylist at The Hair Port.

*Yolanda Vilchis, class of 2002. She came to the United States in 1992 and entered English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at Calhoun Adult Learning Center in 1993 and quickly learned English.

She represented the local adult education center as an EAGLE (Exceptional Adult in Literacy Education) in 2001 and spoke at graduation ceremonies. Yolanda worked at OMC for six years prior to its closing.

She is employed at Tallatoona Head Start, is bilingual, married and has three children.

Previous winners of The GEDD Award, with a place on the GED Wall of Honor include Jeremy Carlson, a registered nurse at Gordon Hospital; Kevin Casey, radio personality at WEBS, Calhoun; and William Daniel, currently head constable for Magistrate Court here.

GEDD is an acronym for Goals, Excellence, Determination and (making a) Difference, guides to choosing the ultimate winner.

Thursday¡¦s audience will be made up partly of current GED classes at CVTC.

"It is an inspirational event for them," said Wayne Minshew, literacy council director. "This event shows them what can be accomplished with hard work, study, and perseverance."
