Furloughs loom for teachers, prosecutors with budget shortfall
The DA’s office and Coosa Valley Tech are planning for shortfalls.

The adult literacy program at Coosa Valley Technical College is facing a $32,000 shortfall under the state supplemental budget for the fiscal year ending June 30.

Statewide, the program is lacking about $800,000 — needed to cover the salaries of 246 teachers for a month.

CVTC President Craig McDaniel said he has until Tuesday to submit a local plan of action to the Department of Technical and Adult Education. At a DTAE conference Friday, he said, college presidents learned there is no other state money to tap.

“It’s a real problem because we’re only six weeks away from the end of the fiscal year,” McDaniel said. “This late into the year, our money is spent.”

The CVTC program serves more than 350 local students, most of whom are studying for their GEDs.

McDaniel said several teachers will likely be furloughed without pay for a month, until 2008 funding kicks in July 1.

He’s also planning to sift through some discretionary spending accounts and talk with board members of the CVTC Foundation, which collects donations for scholarships and financial assistance for needy students.

“It’s kind of touch and go,” McDaniel said. “We thought it was all taken care of, but now it’s not.”
