Coosa Valley Technical College Faculty and Staff Lose 645 Pounds Coosa Valley Technical College’s (CVTC) faculty and staff are a little lighter around the waistline after losing a combined total of 645 pounds in a little friendly weight loss competition.
In January 2006, CVTC kicked off their Lose Weight and Be Healthy Challenge. Open to faculty and staff on the Floyd, Gordon, and Polk County campuses of CVTC, the challenge consisted of 11 teams and 21 individuals competing against one another in a 15 week weigh off to see who could lose the most percentage of their body weight.
Each week, participants weighed in and a moderator recorded their progress. Weights were kept confidential, but as a motivator, winners for the week were announced with percentages lost.
The winners in the individual competition were: first place Tony Cantrell, Computer Information Systems Instructor on the Floyd County Campus; second place Candy O’Kelley, Instructional Services Secretary on the Polk County Campus; and a third place tie between Keith Parker, Maintenance on the Gordon County Campus, and Jim Bowers, Workforce Investment Act Assistant Career Advisor on the Floyd County Campus. Team winners were: first place “When Pigs Fly,” second place “Pigs in a Polk,” and third place “Skillet Lickers.”
“I had already started on a diet about a week before CVTC’s competition began. I decided to join the competition for added motivation,” stated Tony Cantrell.
The Lose Weight and Be Healthy Challenge was the brainchild of a committee called the ICAN team. The ICAN team was formed during CVTC’s customer service initiative, called ExCITE. The ExCITE program is a value driven initiative that is based upon five core values that should influence the actions of faculty and staff at CVTC. The core values are: excellent quality in every facet of CVTC’s efforts, customer service for internal and external customers, integrity in the manner that resources are managed, teamwork at all levels, and everyone is respected. Each employee at CVTC is encouraged to incorporate the core values into their daily routines. The ICAN team, composed of a variety of CVTC faculty and staff from all divisions, campuses, and departments, creates opportunities for the faculty and staff at CVTC to exhibit the CORE values of ExCITE on both a personal and professional level.
“The Lose Weight and Be Healthy Challenge was developed in an effort to encourage both faculty and staff to participate in activities that would improve their quality of life, thereby increasing overall productivity. We hope this will become an annual event at CVTC,” stated Jennifer Carter, Computer Information Systems Instructor and member of the ICAN team.
Individual winner Tony Cantrell lost 40.5 pounds which equaled 16.1 percent of his total body weight.
