Coosa Valley Technical College to Serve as Regional Assessment Site for the Georgia Wrestling Weight Management Program Coosa Valley Technical College (CVTC) has entered into an agreement with the Georgia High School Association to serve as a Regional Assessment Site for the Georgia Wrestling Weight Management program. The college, through its Continuing Education Division, will conduct a hydration test and a body fat assessment for every high school wrestler in the five school systems it serves in Floyd, Gordon, and Polk counties.
The weight assessment is a requirement of the National Federation of State High School Associations and mandates that all high school wrestlers must be assessed prior to competing. CVTC has purchased the required equipment for the assessment and the continuing education staff members will receive training on the proper procedures to administer the assessments.
CVTC has several motivations to partner with the Georgia High School Association in this effort. The first is that the schools in the region are already partners in many ways and providing these assessments gives CVTC an opportunity to once again assist in a unique manner. Second, the opportunity to have over two hundred high school students in a somewhat captive environment provides for a great marketing and recruiting opportunity.
The third reason makes the partnership with the Georgia High School Association a win-win situation. CVTC recently conducted a “Biggest Loser” contest among its faculty and staff, and participants collectively lost well over 600 pounds. The college envisions utilizing the equipment and training to implement a wellness program that will be available for all faculty and staff.
“It is very important that we have schools like Coosa Valley Technical College help in this project. The ultimate point of the Weight Management program is risk minimization. The assessments that will be done at Coosa Valley Tech will help establish safe, allowable weights for wrestling athletes. More than 7,000 boys and girls participate in wrestling during the season, and Coosa Valley Tech will play a vital role in getting a large number of those athletes evaluated,” stated Gary Phillips, Assistant Executive Director of the Georgia High School Association.
The $10.00 per student assessment fee will defray the initial cost of purchasing the equipment and staff cost to conduct the assessment but the college sees the real benefit as being in a position to provide a service to the community and its employees.
Coosa Valley Technical College is the first technical college in the state to become a Regional Assessment Site.
