Coosa Valley Technical College (CVTC) hosted a luncheon for the local nominees for the 2007 Georgia Manufacturer of the Year award. Coosa Valley Technical College (CVTC) and the area Chambers’ of Commerce have nominated three area manufacturing companies for the 2007 Georgia Manufacturer of the Year award.
Jefferson Southern Corporation of Rockmart, Georgia, was nominated by CVTC and the Polk County Chamber of Commerce in the medium category. Companies in the medium category have 151-750 employees. The company employs about 185 employees and nearly 90 percent of the workforce are residents of Polk County. Jefferson Southern manufactures automotive components.
Profile Extrusion Company was nominated by the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce and CVTC. Profile Extrusion is an aluminum extrusion plant in Rome, Georgia, and was nominated in the small category. A company in the small category employs less than 150 workers. The company experienced an $8 million plant expansion in 2006 that is expected to add at least 20 jobs to the facility and increase capacity by 60 percent.
Evco Plastics was nominated by the Gordon County Chamber of Commerce and Coosa Valley Technical College. Evco was nominated in the small category for manufacturing companies with a workforce of less than 150. Evco Plastics has grown to 70 employees and three shifts. Evco has a net investment in Calhoun of $3.8 million and has doubled its plant size in recent years.

Those in attendance were representatives from the nominated companies, representatives from the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce, Gordon County Chamber of Commerce, and Polk County Chamber of Commerce and members of CVTC’s staff and board of directors.
Willis Potts, retired, Temple Inland was the guest speaker at the event.
Pete McDonald, CVTC’s Vice President of Economic Development presented each company with a framed photograph of their facility.
The state winners will be announced on April 12, 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia.

"The Governor's Manufacturer of the Year Awards program is a great way for Georgia to recognize the importance of manufacturing to the economy of our state. Jobs in the manufacturing sector of the economy provide higher incomes to workers than jobs in the service sector. The incomes paid in manufacturing are the foundation for jobs in the retail, medical, and service sectors of the economy,” stated Pete McDonald, Vice President of Economic Development for Coosa Valley Technical College.
In promoting awareness of manufacturing and its importance to our state, the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education and the Georgia Department of Economic Development emphasize that manufacturing is vital to Georgia’s economy; nearly 10,000 manufacturing facilities are located in Georgia, providing jobs for approximately 450,000 Georgians; manufacturing accounts for almost 10 percent of the employment in our state; and Georgia’s manufacturing operations include a variety of industries, such as transportation equipment, aerospace, computers and electronics, food, paper, metal fabrication, textiles, and plastics.
