Coosa Valley Technical College Implements New Wireless Network for Students
Coosa Valley Technical College (CVTC) has just completed the installation of a new school-wide wireless network for the benefit of its students. Each of the college’s three campuses—in Floyd, Gordon, and Polk Counties—now has complete wireless coverage, technically referred to as WLAN 802.11a/b/g. Students will be allowed to bring their personal “notebook” computers or handhelds that use the wireless technology in order to access the growing amount of off-campus information needed from Internet sources, such as personal e-mail and the World Wide Web. According to Rodney Tyler, Director of Technology, this new wireless network will offer students a quick way to access information needed externally, without impacting the security of the campus network. “We purchased state-of-the-art equipment and software that had the manageability and security features that we were looking for,” said Tyler. The college implemented some wireless technology on a small scale several years ago, but did not have consolidated, complete coverage as it does now. “This addition will allow our students, faculty and staff another dimension of learning, and provide access outside the walls of the traditional classroom,” stated Dr. Craig McDaniel, CVTC President.
