CVTC Introduces HEROES Employee Reward and Recognition Program Coosa Valley Technical College recently unveiled the new HEROES employee recognition program and named Tina Cummings and the Surgical Technology program as the first recipients of the award. HEROES is an acronym that stands for helping everyone recognize others’ exceptional service. The HEROES program was created in an effort to recognize and reward employees at Coosa Valley Technical College (CVTC) who go above and beyond their regular job duties.
The HEROES concept was developed by an employee committee as a part of CVTC’s ExCITE program. The ExCITE program is a value driven initiative that is based upon five core values that should influence the actions of faculty and staff at CVTC. The core values are: excellent quality in every facet of CVTC’s efforts, customer service for internal and external customers, integrity in the manner that resources are managed, teamwork at all levels, and everyone is respected. “Our committee wanted to find a way to inspire community service and create a sense of community and belonging at Coosa Valley Tech, while recognizing the works that many of our faculty and staff perform, day in and day out,” said Gerald McFry, Chair of the ExCITE employee committee and Management and Supervisory Development Instructor at CVTC. “We felt if we had an ongoing, organized way to recognize those good works, it might inspire others to become involved,” added McFry. Nominations for the HEROES awards are taken at the Floyd, Gordon, and Polk county campus locations of CVTC. Each month, the employee committee will give an individual HEROES award and a group or department HEROES award. “Anyone can make a nomination, whether it be a student, a faculty or staff member, even a visitor that has been on campus and was helped or received excellent customer service,” said McFry.
Tina Cummings, Surgical Technology Program Director at CVTC, was chosen as the first individual HEROES award winner and her Surgical Technology program received the group HEROES award. Cummings has a long list of things she has done, not only at CVTC, but also for the community. Cummings and her surgical technology students worked on a Habitat for Humanity House in Rome. The Surgical Technology program also sponsored the 447th Air Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron located at Sather Air Base in Iraq. The group sent care packages, cards, and monetary contributions to the Squadron. They also communicated with the Squadron via e-mail, regular mail, and through phone calls. Cummings graduated her first group of surgical technology students in March 2007. She coordinated the process of applying for accreditation for the Surgical Technology program. In May 2007, the college was awarded accreditation for the Surgical Technology program. During this time, she was also working on her Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, which she received from Bellevue University in Omaha, Nebraska last month.
“Because of Tina’s community service efforts, her accomplishments, and her leadership, we thought she exemplified what a CVTC HEROES award winner should be,” said McFry. A CVTC HEROES award winner of the year will be selected among the individual monthly winners.
