CVTC Basketball Begins In January

Coosa Valley Technical College (CVTC) will revive the college’s Men’s Basketball Program after a 39 year hiatus in January of 2008.

“The school had a basketball team in 1969 that played eight games in its first season,” stated Dr. Craig McDaniel, President of Coosa Valley Technical College. “The original team mascot was the Bruins.” When the college decided to offer basketball as a league sport, Bruins was the overwhelming choice among the faculty and staff, so we have revived the original mascot from the sixties.”

CVTC will compete against three other technical colleges in a 12 game schedule that will run from January 12, 2008 until March 15, 2008. The four team league includes CVTC, Griffin Technical College, Northwestern Technical College, and West Central Technical College.

“We are proud to announce that Rome Coca Cola will be our corporate sponsor. They are providing our game uniforms, practice uniforms, game balls, and other equipment,” said Jim Williams, Coosa Valley Technical College’s Athletic Director.

“Rome Coca Cola is very happy to partner with Coosa Valley Technical College to build its basketball program,” stated Tony Ray, Center Manager of Rome Coca Cola.

The practice site for the CVTC Bruins is the Rome YMCA. “We want to thank Scott McCreless, Director, Rome YMCA, and the Y for donating use of the gym, free of charge, for the team’s practices,” said Williams. CVTC’s home court is being finalized and will be announced at a later date.

CVTC will play the first game at home against Northwestern Technical College on January 12, 2008.

“The players are very excited to be playing for CVTC,” stated Williams. The students must be enrolled at Coosa Valley Technical College with at least 10 credit hours to be eligible to play. “I told them they had to make the grades to play. We may not make the sweet 16 this year because we had a late start practicing, but watch for us next year.”
