Housley Named 2007 GEDD Award Winner
The Calhoun-Gordon Council for a Literate Community, Mannington Carpets, and Coosa Valley Technical College named Judy Housley as the 2007 GEDD Award Winner. The award ceremony was held at Coosa Valley Technical College’s Gordon County Campus.

The GEDD Award is presented each year to a Coosa Valley Technical College GED graduate that exemplifies the qualities set forth in the GEDD acronym. GEDD stands for goals that students must set in order to achieve, excellence before and after receiving their GED, determination, and making a difference in his or her environment. A group of GED instructors at Coosa Valley Technical College’s Gordon County Campus came up with the concept for the GEDD Award four years ago.

Housley earned her GED from Coosa Valley Technical College in 1994. She worked as a family advocate for the Gordon County School System for five years. She attended Coosa Valley Technical College’s Cosmetology program and graduated in 2005 with high honors (4.0 average). Housley set a goal to become a cosmetologist. She overcame many challenges to meet her goal. She is currently employed by Hair Port in Calhoun, Georgia.

Hearing the news she had won the GEDD Award, Housley wiped tears from her eyes. “I owe a lot of this to my instructor, Coleen Brooks,” stated Housley. She went on to say that when she first started the process to get her GED, she didn’t think she could do it. “Coleen talked me into staying and it was a life changing moment,” said Housley.

Housley was one of three finalists for the 2007 GEDD Award. The other finalists included Tamara Burchett, a 2005 CVTC GED graduate and Yolanda Vilches, a 2002 CVTC GED graduate.

As a part of the GEDD Award, winners receive a plaque on the GED Wall of Honor. Housley joins previous GEDD Award winners Jeremy Carlson, a registered nurse at Gordon Hospital; Kevin Casey, radio personality at WEBS Radio in Calhoun, Georgia; and William Daniel, head constable for the Gordon County Magistrate Court.
