The Field of Sonography OPPORTUNITIES Opportunities in this dynamic health field include participation in high quality patient care, development of health programs, and medical research.
The rewards include personal gratification and social prestige of a profession with many opportunities for diversification and advancement.
ADVANCEMENT Continuous advances in ultrasound and expansion of hospital and health services create constant demand for skilled, qualified Sonographers. Services are needed in urban and rural areas, large institutions, and doctor's offices. Opportunities to work in the commercial sector are also available. There is considerable evidence that skilled Sonographers will never lack opportunity for employment.
ECONOMIC SECURITY The increasing importance of technical contributions to the medical field establish the qualified Sonographers firmly in their employment situations. Advancement depends upon personality, character, ability to assume responsibility, and professional preparation and competence.
DUTIES The Sonographer must prepare the patient for the examination and explain the procedure to the patient. Duties include scanning the patient and providing the physician with adequate information to make the best possible diagnosis. The Sonographer may also be called upon to do clerical work involved in keeping records of the patients and films. Sonographers are responsible for the safety and mental and physical comfort of the patient while in their care.

Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers SDMS The SDMS is the main organization which promotes the profession of Sonography. Sonographers who practice General, Vascular and Echocardiography are all represented by the SDMS. |

Society of Vascular Ultrasound (Formerly SVT) SVT Web Site The SVUS is the only organization that is strictly dedicated to the profession of Vascular Ultrasound. The SVUS works closely with the SDMS to promote and advance the interests of Vascular Sonographers. |

Commision on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs CAAHEP.ORG Coosa Valley Technical College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recomendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRCDMS). All completers will be eligible to sit for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers certification exams for Abdominal, Ob/Gyn, and Physics (ARDMS) or the Vascular & Vascular Physics (RVT) immediately after graduation. |
